Duncan has put
up a his own build diary Check out the Photo
Diaries.
Hi Dale,
My name is Duncan Smith
and I too am in the process of building an IFG Roadster. I'm by no
means as far into it as you are. I've got the chassis
torn down and stretched, and am waiting for my slalom front/rear suspension
and rims from Ryane. I plan to take delivery of the actual chassis
in a few
months and I'm warming up the tools in the hopes of having this smokewagon
on the road this summer. Still shopping for a good V8 and am
looking at
the Northstar now.
Anyhow, I was browsing the
pics of your build-up (very useful, BTW) and had a double-take of the twin
rear rad mounts that you've got just behind the
wheels. I'm curious as to what radiators you plan to use.
I was originally going to mount my second radiator in the space between
the firewall and the
engine and route some air to it, but I like your authentic version
better! Besides, what do you need a rear trunk for in a car like that?
Although it's too late for
me, I'm sure others will find your PDF documentation very useful.
I had to import the video into MPG format on 4
CD's on my PC so I can use my laptop to playback the video right beside
the car. There are still topics in the video that are vague which
I'm no doubt
about to fumble around with, but that's part of the fun.
Thanks!
Wow. Your PDF chapter is FAR more workable than the mostly-irrelevant
hand drawings IFG provides you. Great job. Good luck with the wiring
diagram for the new dash, BTW. I don't know if you got the same Denny's
placemat doodles that I received, but anything would be an improvement!
I imagine my expectations are high with the timeframe, but I'll have a
lot of time to work on it in a few weeks once my contract is up.
I remember reading somewhere about someone else who made a Diablo
kit and opted to stay true-to-form and mounted the radiators on just the
other side
of the rear grilles. I'm pretty sure he said he used a common
minivan radiator which was amazingly narrow. That or some miniature
sub-compact like the Firefly or a Mini. I wasn't looking forward
to that front radiator design/mount, anyway. I think I'll move the
battery up there and such. Maybe even a spare 50KM/max minitire - (ha!).
I'm rubbing beads together and praying that P Zeros will come in RunFlat(tm)
form someday.
I've been gathering prices for an EFI SBC, and it looks like about $4500
CDN for a decent engine that can be tubbed-up later. Then another
$850US for
the V8 conversion kit. I'd love to try the Northstar route, but
I think the $9000 USD ($14K CDN) is out of my league for now. I spent
a lot of money on
the slalom front/rear suspension (with wider track to get the wheel
offsets more accurate) and the 12" brakes. Besides, I imagine I'm
going to truly
abuse the engine once the novelty is at its peak. Maybe it's
safer for me to go the SBC route until I grow-up/grow-out of it -- or blow
it up -- whichever comes first.
